Beachy Kitchen

LOCATION: Santa Cruz, CA

This Santa Cruz home is just a block from one of the best surfing beaches on the West Coast. We wanted to bring the vibe of the ocean inside, while keeping the design clean and simple. Removing a hard to access storage loft above the dark, existing kitchen allows light to flood in from above, and makes the modest U-shaped configuration feel much bigger than its square footage would suggest. Crisp and classic white shaker cabinets are punctuated by oil rubbed bronze hardware, a finish repeated in the farmhouse lighting. Boards from the general contractor’s fence were reclaimed to wrap the structural beam, adding perfectly weathered character. Matte gray quartz counters convey the appearance of concrete, and frosted backsplash tile is reminiscent of wave-tumbled beach glass. As with all of our projects, we sourced healthy cabinets and specified non-toxic finishes, energy efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures.
